Museums reveal as much about their visitors as they do about their objects. I watched a man stand before a broken amphora for nearly five minutes, tracing the cracks with his eyes as if reading a letter addressed to him alone. Sometimes the most revealing artifacts are not the ones behind glass, but the gestures people make toward them.
